Create a custom oxygen order on the medication list
FAQ: I need to add an order, and it's continuous oxygen.
-
Start by Adding a New Medication
- Open the MAR and add a new medication.
- While oxygen is not technically a medication, it should still be added to the MAR for tracking purposes.
-
Enter the Drug Name
- Type in "oxygen" under the drug name field.
- You can select an option (e.g., green cloud or pink pill) or type your own data manually.
-
Specify Dosage and Frequency
- Input the dosage as "2L" or 2 liters.
- Set the frequency, e.g., daily at 8 a.m., to ensure staff performs a daily check.
-
Add Specific Instructions
- Provide clear instructions, such as "Place cannula on the nose with 2L of oxygen."
- Delete unnecessary default information as long as staff can follow the instructions.
-
Document the Reason and Oxygen Saturation Levels
- Include the reason for administering oxygen, e.g., "low oxygen level."
- Add oxygen saturation levels if necessary.
-
Save the Entry
- Save the medication entry. On the med pass, ensure you document the oxygen dose, e.g., 2L/minute, and mark it as given.
-
Duplicate the Medication for PRN Use
- If needed, duplicate the entry and set it as PRN.
- Backdate the PRN entry if required, and use the same dosage and saturation information.
-
Update or Edit as Necessary
- If any changes are needed, go back into the medication list and edit the information.
- Ensure instructions for staff include checking the tube, oxygen tank, and other related items daily.
-
Emphasize Staff Responsibilities
- It is mandatory for staff to verify the oxygen setup daily and check for proper function.
- Include these steps in the instructions for consistent care.
