Keep a running count on medications that are controlled substances that have a range type of order
FAQ: I have a Pharmacy Morphine order that has a range to it; how do I correctly add this medication?
-
Understand Range Orders
- If you have a range order (e.g., 0.25 ml or 0.5 ml), Synkwise does not support to give past the set amount.
- Always use the smallest amount listed (e.g., 0.25 ml).
-
Add the Narcotic Order
- Go to the pharmacy order and confirm there are no duplicate entries.
- Enter the smallest dose (e.g., 0.25 ml) under the pharmacy order.
- Include reasons such as “shortness of breath” or “pain” for the medication.
-
Set Initial Narcotic Count
- Input the amount sent by the pharmacy (e.g., 30 ml).
- Remember to keep track of when the medication will require a refill.
-
Administer the Medication
- Go to the “PRN meds” section and administer the medication at the specified time.
- Select the medication (e.g., morphine) and enter the dose as 0.25 ml.
- If a larger dose like 0.5 ml is required, split it into two separate entries with the same time.
-
Update the Narcotic Count
- After administering, check the narcotic count to ensure it updates correctly (e.g., 30 ml → 29.75 ml).
- Work backwards in time when recording doses to maintain an accurate count.
- Avoid entering doses before the scheduled time to prevent errors in the narcotic count.
-
View History
- Use the history view to see previous doses and ensure accuracy.
