Secondary Witness on a Narcotic Count (Caregivers)

As a staff member, these are the steps to take when adding a secondary witness to a change of shift narcotic count

  1. Log in and Navigate to Narcotic Count

    • Log in to your account.
    • Go to the resident's profile.
    • Access the MedPass section.
    • Click on Narcotic Count to view medication details.
  2. Add a New Count as a Secondary Witness

    • Check the last recorded count in the history.
    • Click Add a Count and enter the updated number (e.g., 28).
    • Select Change of Shift as the reason.
    • The Secondary Witness checkbox is automatically selected, as this is a required setting.
  3. Notify the Secondary Witness

    • Enter the name of the staff member (e.g., Catherine) who will serve as the Secondary Witness.
    • Once saved, the witness will receive an email notification (if email notifications are enabled).
    • You can check the View History section and click Show Secondary Witness Details to see if the witness has signed.
  4. Secondary Witness Signs Off

    • The witness must log in and check their email for the notification.
    • If the email isn’t received, they should go to Profile > My Settings and ensure email notifications are enabled.
    • Even without an email, they can log in, go to EMAR > Resident Profile > Narcotic Count, and look for a blue notification bell.
    • Click the bell, then sign or initial the count to confirm.
  5. Review & Print the Narcotic Count History

    • Once signed, the count is officially recorded.
    • To review, click Print to generate a summary of all Secondary Witness signatures and count history.
