Managing medication orders efficiently is crucial for ensuring patient safety and accurate record-keeping. Follow these step-by-step instructions to edit a medication order, adjust PRN settings, and review the updated and older orders.
Note* Given PRN medications when edited, will result in a new order with the Current Time and Date. Please refer to the How to Discontinue a Medication Guide.
Locate the Medication:
- Navigate to the list of medications for the patient.
- Identify and select the medication you wish to edit.
Begin the Editing Process:
- Click on the three dots (ellipsis) next to the selected medication to open the options menu.
- Select the "Edit" option to begin modifying the medication details.
Adjust PRN Settings:
- In the medication edit screen, locate the PRN (Pro Re Nata, or "as needed") check-box.
- Click to activate the PRN option if it applies to the medication.
Set the Frequency:
- Choose the appropriate frequency for the medication's administration. This determines how often the PRN medication can be given.
Specify the Time of Administration:
- Set the specific time(s) for when the medication can be administered, either in the morning (AM) or evening (PM).
Update Instructions and Additional Information:
- Update the instructions for the medication to reflect any new orders or changes.
- Review and edit other relevant details, such as the reason for the medication, expiration dates, number of refills, and any vitals that need to be monitored.
Confirm Changes:
- Carefully review the changes you've made.
- Check the "I'm Aware of the Changes" box to acknowledge your review.
Save and Review the Updated Information:
- Save the changes to finalize the updated medication order.
- Reopen the medication to ensure all changes have been applied correctly.
Review the Order in Med Log:
- Navigate to the Med Log section to view the updated order in the patient’s medication history.
Review Previous PRN Orders:
- Click on the PRN section to review any previous orders associated with the medication.
Filter and Discontinue Old Orders:
- Use the filter and discontinue options to view and manage older medication orders that are no longer active.
Note* Discontinued Medications can be restored if discontinued by mistake.
