Inside a Pharmacy Order - Review and Approve

Reviewing the fields and options inside and order when approving a medication from the pharmacy

FAQ: I clicked Add Order and now what do I do inside of a pharmacy order?

  1. Review Drug and Medication Details

    • Most Drug Details like the medication name, route, and strength are added by the pharmacy and verified with a blue checkmark.

    • Manually add the Reason for the medication if you know it; otherwise, this can be added later.

    • You can upload an image of the medication now or add it later by editing the order.

  2. Set the Classification and Schedule

    • Under Classification, check any relevant boxes, such as Sliding Scale for insulin orders or PRN for as-needed medications.

    • Set the Start Date, which is the date you want to begin documenting the medication in Synkwise. You can backdate this if needed.

    • If the medication has a specific duration, add an End Date.

    • Adjust the Administration Time(s) by clicking on them to set the exact times the medication should be given.

  3. Configure Additional Options

    • Review the toggles and enable them as needed:

      • Expiration Date: It is recommended to add this for all medications, especially PRNs.

      • Can it be crushed?: Indicate if the medication can be crushed.

      • Self-Managed: Toggle on if the resident takes the medication independently. It will appear on the med list but not require documentation on the medpass.

      • Track Dispensed Quantity: Enable this to keep a count of narcotics or other controlled medications.

  4. Add Vital Restrictions

    • If the instructions require holding the medication based on a vital sign (e.g., "hold if systolic is less than 100"), you must add a restriction.

    • Click on the required vital, such as Blood Pressure or Blood Glucose.

    • Enter the specific parameters for when the medication should be held. You can add multiple vital restrictions to a single order.

  5. Create and Finalize the Order

    • After reviewing all the information, click Create this medication.

    • The order will be added to the resident's Medications list.

    • To make changes later, find the medication on the list, click the three dots icon, and select Edit.

  6. Administer on the Medpass

    • When you administer the medication on the medpass, the system will prompt you to enter any required vitals before you can mark it as given.
