Mark PRNs as effective or not effective when giving an as-needed medication
FAQ - How can I go back to a given PRN medication to document its effectiveness?
1. Administer the PRN Medication
-
Start under the MedPass section.
-
Click the blue button to Give a PRN.
-
Select the medication you administered.
-
Add any additional notes or context for the medication.
-
Click Administer to proceed.
2. Complete the Monitoring Section
-
If the medication requires monitoring (e.g. for pain level), this step must be completed before marking effectiveness.
-
You will see an option to mark Effective or Not Effective after monitoring.
3. View PRN Medication History
-
At the top of the MedPass screen, go to the PRN Medication section.
-
Here, you’ll find a history of all administered PRNs and those marked as Pending Review.
-
Locate the PRN you gave and note if the effectiveness has not yet been completed.
4. Complete Effectiveness Review
-
Click on the PRN entry from the history.
-
Set the Effective Date to match when the medication took effect (e.g., if it worked after 2 hours, adjust the date accordingly).
-
Add a generalization or note describing the effectiveness (e.g., "Resident reported reduced pain after 2 hours").
-
Click Save to update the effectiveness.
5. Important Notes About Timing
-
If you mark a PRN as effective directly under the MedPass, the system records the current date and time.
-
To backdate the effectiveness (e.g., marking it for a previous date), always go to the PRN Med section.
-
This ensures the Effective Date aligns accurately with the administration date.
6. Edit or Delete PRN Entries
-
Once a PRN entry is saved in the history, you can click Action to either Edit or Delete the administration.
